For each study, after removing outliers (see QC section),
each of 23 demographic effects was assessed on a gene-by-gene basis.
We recorded which demographics were significant for gene, where significance was defined as p<.01, FC>1.3.
For each of comparison of effect sizes, all demographics were analyzed using two levels.
Continuous variables and ordered categorical variables were cut at values as close as
possible to the median (e.g. PMI>30 vs. PMI<30; Drug Use = ‘Heavy’ vs. Drug Use = ‘None, Light, Moderate’).
Some of the demographics were analyzed using the whole patient set in a study, while some were analyzed
within each disease group to avoid confounding of the demographic effect and the disease effect.
